Restaurant Of The Week: Kuvuka Cafe, Vilankulo

We love Kuvuka Cafe. And so do expat diving and horseback riding instructors from the Bazaruto archipelago, who always make sure to call in here for a fix of banana pancakes when returning to the mainland. With a lush green garden, hip garden furniture, ocean views, and a wooden balcony, it’s a lovely spot to grab lunch, brunch, or coffee. But note that it often closes for a month or so during the low season in January, so it’s worth calling ahead if you’re counting on those pancakes.

Open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day, the owners are friendly and helpful. Got a diving or travel question? They’re the fount of all local knowledge. If you’re staying at Casa Babi or Baobab Beach backpackers, it’s a short stroll away along the same road. Otherwise, coming from town, count on a 20-minute walk. The lunch menu changes daily according to what’s fresh and in season. We loved the lula loco, or crazy calamari, served in a spicy tomato sauce. There’s also Fishy Friday, starring chef Alfeu’s divine fish curry, followed by Chicken Saturday and…you guessed it, Goat Sunday.

If you’re looking for breakfast, you can grab a freshly-squeezed juice for 60 Mets and a breakfast burrito. And of course those banana pancakes. Bigger spicy chicken burritos (250 Mets) served with guacamole and sour cream, make it onto the lunch menu. And the chef doesn’t cut any corners; the tortillas are made in the kitchen. The teatime special includes a gooey slice of chocolate cake and a cappuccino for 150 Mets.

Did we mention the martinis made with fresh garden basil, the healthy smoothies, the salads, and the freshly-ground coffee? And the free Wi-Fi? And that gorgeous wooden furniture, topped with pretty rope placemats? Places like Kavuka Cafe aren’t exactly a dime a dozen in these parts. Vilanculos is blessed to have it.
