Zooba is a trendy joint which brings flair and fun to traditional Egyptian food. Whilst your average Egyptian would laugh at koshari (a typical pasta/tomato cheap Egyptian dish) being sold for more than a few dollars, the food offers a unique balance between traditional flavours and a modern setting.
The restaurant has a homey yet modern and funky ambiance, with staff speaking relatively good English. On the central wooden table where people sit inside you can be pressed for space if it’s busy, but in the evenings there is also outdoor seating on the pavement. Lining the walls are freshly baked breads, home-made pickles and other locally made products. They also prepare the koshari (above mentioned dish) right in the entrance of the restaurant, in huge metal bowls.
We ordered a selection of typical Egyptian dishes including a strong cheesey dip, aubergine taamiya (felafel with aubergine filling), a mozzarella and taamiya sandwich and a “shakshouka”, an egg and vegetable dish. And, of course, we ordered our familiar koshari (which, to make things extra trendy, Zooba offers a wholegrain version of as well). It came with hot freshly baked bread. Each option tasted great and well together. The waiter was helpful and offered us explanations for each item. I drank a mango and rosemary juice, which I loved! I thought it would be unusual, but it was refreshing and sweet – exactly what I needed when outside is 36°C!
Though the food is tasty, it is not complex cuisine. All dishes are prepared quickly (they also do food to go, which is a popular option) and are simple. If you’re looking for a taste of Egyptian cuisine, I would definitely recommend it.
However, what makes Zooba most appealing to me is the atmosphere. It’s cosy yet has a funky flair. It’s modern, but personal. The food comes quickly and people order, eat and head on out. A fun and tasteful fast-food option which I would happily recommend, especially to those on a budget.
