Like the hotel it’s located in, The Grill Room is a stylish concern, from the sandstone wall water feature on the veranda through to the cool under lit bar. On the terrace contemporary metal sculptures alongside quality dark wicker furniture give an opulent feel and contrast well against the crisp hotel frontage.
This is a great spot for an evening cocktail/sundowner after a busy working day. Cocktails are well mixed with premium spirits, and there is a good range of champagne cocktails or shooters for the adventurous. The Grill Room is owned by the South African Legacy Group. As such there is a prevalence of South African wines on the menu, most at reasonable prices, especially a Viognier at N5000, or Zonnebloem’s excellent Pinotage at N6200.
To accompany the drinks there is a range of bar snacks, all around N3-4000, and dishes like Nigerian peppered chicken wings and prawns in Guinness batter offer a cheeky twist on local favourites. The main menu offers a couple of vegetarian options but as you expect from a Grillroom the focus is on meat/fish dishes. It’s not cheap at N12,100 for lamb shank, but the food is tasty and well presented. Refreshingly there is a ‘line caught fish of the day’, not only an environmentally good option, but also surprisingly difficult to find on a stretch of land nestled between a lagoon and the sea.
Staff are unobtrusive yet easy to get hold of when you wish, a difficult balance to strike and yet more indication that The Wheatbaker sets the bar pretty high where service is concerned. Clientele are well-heeled business travellers or wealthy locals.
