It’s no secret that I love Tasha’s, so I was thrilled to find that they had a branch in Pretoria. Located in Design Square next to the Brooklyn Mall, it’s a stylish addition to the stylish square it sits it.

Like other branches of Tasha’s, this one has the signature Vespa scooter mascot parked outside, plus whimsical design features (such as white-painted pots and pans hanging from the ceiling), and lots of gorgeous, well-dressed people.

Though the menu here is extensive and covers breakfast, lunch, small bites, wine and coffees, I was in the mood for a simple breakfast, which Tasha’s does well. Instead of choosing something like the breakfast royale (poached eggs with asparagus spears or wilted spinach topped with light lemon sauce on seeded health bread or polenta toast), I opted for the mini: a delicious combo plate with one egg, one piece of bacon, one Italian sausage, grilled mushrooms and grilled tomatoes. Every item was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. I also decided to forego my usual favorite, the Tasha’s hot chocolate (a glass filled with a dollop of Nutella, served with a side of hot milk and giant marshmallows), in favor of a glass of freshly pressed orange juice, which was heavenly — and quite a bit healthier than the other option.

If I hadn’t been in a rush to leave I would have lingered at my table, which sat right at the threshold between the indoor and outdoor seating areas. Giant wood-framed doors open onto the square, which is perfect for leisurely people watching. Wide umbrellas shade diners from the sun, and the modular white plastic chairs are thankfully comfortable to sit in for long spells.

Service here is above average but not stellar, though it was not busy when I went so I was served quickly and there were no errors with my order. Prices are reasonable as well: my partner and I ate for a mere R140 (US$12).

Tashas is a growing chain with locations in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and even Dubai. The only location in Pretoria is in the Brooklyn Design Square associated with Brooklyn Mall. Tashas is a well-liked and always busy upscale café. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Tashas menu is very eclectic—from traditional breakfasts, to sandwiches and salads, to pastas, and even quesadillas.

I stopped by for a weekday breakfast and was very intrigued by the menu options. Finally, I settled on choosing the “one pan breakfast” from the seasonal specials menu. It was a medley of tasty ingredients including sausage, peas, potatoes, peppers, and onions all served in a tomato-based sauce and topped with two soft poached eggs, cheddar cheese, and some micro herbs. The one pan wonder was served with a huge stack of ciabatta toast. Fresh baked breads are a highlight at Tashas. Lunch and dinner options looked equally intriguing and delicious.
The décor is modern yet classic and airy, combining elements of simple white walls, wood furniture, and glass accents, and the restaurant is quite comfortable even though it’s small. Service was a little slow and inattentive for the caliber of restaurant, but the restaurant was surprisingly busy for a weekday morning. Brooklyn Mall is probably the top spot for shopping in Pretoria and has a number of upscale shops, cafes, and also a movie theater. Design Square, where Tashas is located, is an outdoor plaza in the heart of the mall that has several other restaurants as well. Tashas is probably one of your best options for a more upscale meal to take a break from shopping. Due to its quasi-outdoor location, the atmosphere at Tashas is certainly better than the average mall restaurant, and Design Square is a popular local destination to enjoy a meal and relax.
