Spice is a great little Indian restaurant opposite Bolton White hotel next to the bull and bush suya spot. Outside, there is a shaded area and small suya stand. The interior is colourfully cool and relaxed with a variety of northern Indian woven wall hangings, along with sitar music lending a feeling of authenticity. It’s a great spot for those with big appetites or those on a budget. The lunch buffet is all you can eat for N2500, and unlike many buffets here, it doesn’t suffer in quality. Trays of excellent tandoori chicken, crispy samosas, spiced okra, black daal and lamb rogan josh to name a few. Naan is freshly cooked in the tandoori oven and brought to the table still steaming. It’s not the most stylish nor terribly upmarket, but the banks of Indian businessmen who frequent here at lunchtimes are a testament to its authenticity. Manager Siddiqi is originally from Pakistan, raised in Ghana, and had two successful restaurants in Kano before security concerns forced him to close operations there and move here. He is a genuine, friendly host walking the room to ensure diners are happy and comfortable. He’s also a stickler for good food. For example when he discovered local lamb was being butchered in a way that ended up with tough meat, he simply cut out the middle men and had his team do the butchering themselves. The result, probably the best Rogan Josh in Abuja. In terms of taste and value, it’s hard to beat.
