Catering mainly to guests at the Southern Sun Hotel, in which it is based, the restaurant also caters for visitors. It’s an attractive location with the restaurant flanked on one side by a row of double-height windows which themselves overlook an outside dining area, and an elegant floodlit swimming pool beyond. It’s a great spot to enjoy a balmy Lagos evening.
The buffet offers a range of meats and steaks cooked to order alongside stir-frys and a fresh salad bar. For those keen to sample local cuisine there is a range of fish and meat stews alongside jollof and plantain starches. The dessert trolley takes pride of place on the floor of the dining room as well it should — it’s a veritable tower of cakes and confectionery that could grace the patisseries of France. At N7200 per person for the buffet there is a lot on offer so bring your appetite. For those looking for a lighter bite — or unhappy with a buffet option — there is a small but comprehensive a la carte menu: chicken atete (chicken with a yellow pepper and coriander marinade) for N4500, or a seafood platter with prawns and a half lobster for N6500, to name a couple.
The adjoining bar is stylishly laid out, with the black stone bar sitting well against black leather armchairs and marble floors. Unfortunately it is a little small for the size of the hotel, so getting a table here requires either good timing or an eagle eye. For sports fans there are two TVs on either corner normally screening La Liga or the British Premiership. Despite its stylish setting, it’s actually a relaxed and informal environment in which deals are celebrated or near misses commiserated.
