Sequoia, perched on the northern most tip of Zamalek island, is a prime restaurant in the perfect spot on the Nile. Not for those looking for a cheap meal, this restaurant is the most prestigious — and expensive — of the three on the north shore of Zamalek island.
Each table is located within yards of the river, and at night the view is stunning. Sequoia is open air, with a white canopy above the central seating and hanging lanterns. The atmosphere is incredible, and all the while there is the humdrum chatter in the background of wealthier Egyptians and foreigners sitting down to eat.
Sequoia specializes in Mediterranean food, and in particular, mezze. The menu has an excellent of cold and hot mezze, in addition to seafood and other traditional Egyptian dishes. They also serve cocktails, wine, beer and sheesha.
I had a starter of grilled halloumi, which was delicious. For my main course I ordered the grilled seafood selection, which included giant prawns, aromatic rice, calamari and white fish. It was extremely tasty, and surprisingly filling. The service was good, though the restaurant was busy and at times the waiters were not as attentive as you may have liked, due to sheer demand on them.
Though the food is amazing, the atmosphere and surroundings make Sequoia such a unique spot. Decorated with beautiful coloured sofas and tables, the comfort and ambiance create a real sense of luxury yet “at ease-ness”. You’re able to sit back in comfy couches, look out across the Nile at the glimmering lights and take your time in ordering and enjoying your meal. It was a treat for us to eat there, and we felt very relaxed as we sat, talked and ate.
Reservations are recommended. There is a minimum charge of 150 LE ($21) per person.
