My friend recommended this place to me and I am so glad she did because with all of the water-facing restaurants at the V&A Waterfront, I might not have stopped in. Seelan’s is ideal for lunch or dinner, but during the day it is an excellent spot to look at the sea, the boats, the mountains and all of the passers-by. The atmosphere is Cape Town-meets-St. Tropez and your lazy lunch can easily turn into sundowners by the sea if you are lucky. Seelan himself will inevitably be mingling through the restaurant, sitting and chatting at tables. The helpful staff will walk around and probably serve you some kind of complimentary offering. We had a nice plate of salad before even ordering. The seafood here is spectacular, but what really surprised me is that Seelan’s is a hidden gem for Indian-inspired dishes. Seelan uses his mom’s cooking influence to up the food ante, that is for sure. I started with melt-in-your-mouth beef carpaccio because I knew I was ordering the tuna special for lunch. My friend had her heart set on lamb curry so she patiently saved her appetite. The tuna steak was unbelievable. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a light soy, ginger dressing with fresh tomatoes and veg. I had a side of spinach which was also delicious. I am not a curry girl, but my friend raved about it. The restaurant does Sunday brunch once a month that is popular with the locals. You can also catch live music so check out what the schedule holds and go there for another four-hour lunch. Trust me, you won’t want to leave.
