Redemption Burgers is a tiny little burger joint crammed into the back corner of The Old Biscuit Mill, an edgy and artsy shopping village revamped from, you guessed it, a biscuit mill. The Old Biscuit Mill is a big part of the creative scene in the Woodstock neighborhood and hosts the beloved and busy Neighbourgoods Market each Saturday. However, there are a range of artsy shops open every weekday at the Mill, and the Mill is also home to some of Cape Town’s most celebrated restaurants—The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club.

Redemption Burgers sits solidly in a lower category than the aforementioned award winners! However, it might just hit the spot if a burger, fries, and a beer are what you’re after. The menu is quite simple—you’ve got five burger options. There’s the beef burger, chicken burger, ostrich burger, veggie burger, and finally, the breakfast burger with bacon, egg, and cheese. Each comes with fries. I opted to try the ostrich burger with brie cheese, sweet eggplant piccalilli, and marinated tomato and garlic mayo. Ostrich is usually my favorite, but this one was perhaps a little overworked and overcooked. It was just slightly on the tough side, but the flavors were still good. The fries were great—skinny, crispy fries with a spicy salt. And the price is good.

The drinks menu focuses on a few locally sourced craft beers and espresso-based coffees. Interestingly, there are no soft drinks available, which seems a bit strange, especially since Redemption Burgers seems primarily to be a daytime eatery. I’ve been disappointed twice when attempting to go in the evenings even though they should have been open according to hours posted on their Facebook page. Service was certainly friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is okay. The view is just of the parking lot of The Biscuit Mill, but the interior is neat enough, and The Biscuit Mill is a nice place to explore for some afternoon shopping.
