Ou Meul Bakkery, which is Afrikaans for “old mill bakery”, is a relatively new option on the scene on Long Street. It’s a small chain bakery with three locations so far. I stopped by the Long Street location for an early breakfast on a Monday morning and was really impressed. Long Street is party central—full of pubs, clubs, and backpacker hostels, but Ou Meul is located on a quieter section of the street nearer to the Foreshore. So, it actually has a nice calm atmosphere about it and would be a good place to sit and enjoy the newspaper with your coffee and snacks.

Although Ou Meul is laid out like a typical order-at-the-counter coffee shop, it also has quite an extensive selection of food options. You can get your coffee as a takeaway or sit down at one of the indoor or sidewalk tables to enjoy it from a glass mug. There is a large selection of savory pies—pastries filled with meat or vegetables—in addition to the sweet treats like almond croissants, sticky cinnamon buns, pain au chocolate, and toasted banana bread. There are also several cooked breakfast options such as the traditional eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast; croquet madame, eggs benedict, omelet, or French toast croissant. Lunch options include open sandwiches, burgers, salads, and even fish and chips.

I opted to try a cappuccino, the bobotie pie, and I couldn’t resist testing out the almond croissant. Bobotie is a traditional South African dish of sweet curried hamburger meat, dried fruit, and egg, which worked surprisingly well in the unbelievably flakey pastry. The almond croissant was amazing as well. The service is tops and the atmosphere is very neat, clean, and modern yet classic. There’s even free wifi. Ou Meul is a new favorite for me.
