“Lekker” is a frequently used South African word for “cool , “tasty”, or “good”, and that pretty much sums up Lekker Kalk Bay. It’s a hip and vibey street side café on super busy Main Road in the beach-side village of Kalk Bay. One side of the road is crammed with restaurants and shops while the other side is the train tracks and the beach. So views from Lekker Kalk Bay out over the beach and across False Bay are great. Due to the hilly terrain, the restaurant has a series of levels, so even from the back of the restaurant, you have elevated, great views out of the huge picture window in the front. Or, if you sit at the bar at the front window, you have a great perch for people watching.
The menu at Lekker Kalk Bay is similar to other cafes and coffee shops. They feature a frequently changing menu of burgers, sandwiches, salads, and other café favorites as well as some delicious coffee and sweet treats. I stopped by for an afternoon cappuccino and treat. I tried out the “hummingbird” cake which was similar to carrot cake but also incorporated cinnamon and pineapple flavors. The cake was delicious, but the slice was nearly the size of my head. So, take a friend to help you finish yours. Or, just eat the whole thing and never tell anyone about it. Oops.
Service was very friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is also nice for what it is—a busy, well-priced café in a busy tourist area. Every time I walk by, the place is always packed, but snag a table or a chair at the bar if you can to enjoy a meal or just a quick break from sight-seeing in Kalk Bay. The town is a great place to spend an afternoon shopping and soaking up the sea side atmosphere.
