Tucked away on a quiet Cairo side street near Brazil Street in Zamalek, L’Aubergine is a classy little place. This restaurant has been open for more than 20 years, and there are good reasons for its ongoing popularity. With so many tasty looking options, it was hard to choose from the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influenced menu. Vegetarian options are often limited in Egyptian menus, but L’Aubergine has a good selection for vegetarians.

We ordered the aubergine peanut ravioli in yoghurt coriander sauce (40LE) as a starter. Although the presentation was good, the flavor was a little bland and it felt like it was missing something. The main course of Toqliatta Puccini, slices of beef filled with rosemary (94LE), was delicious. The beef was perfectly cooked and the sauce had a rich, earthy flavor. The vegetarian main of pumpkin kobeba filled with spinach in yoghurt sauce (40LE) was a new twist on kobeba (traditionally meat encased in bulghar wheat).

The restaurant had a wide range of cocktails, wine and beer to choose from, which can be enjoyed with a lunch or dinner (the restaurant is open from 12.30pm), or in the upstairs bar (open 7.30pm – 3am). The décor of the restaurant was warm and inviting, and the music matched the surroundings.

The one drawback of L’Aubergine is the small and narrow space. Because of the limited space, there is no non-smoking area, and it became very loud as the evening got later, and difficult to hear each other.

The service offered was good, and for the quality of food offered, the prices are reasonable. If you’re looking to enjoy some high quality food, we would definitely recommend a visit to L’Aubergine.
