Since the Sheraton’s gourmet restaurant Pilli Pilli shut its doors, Giara has taken over the mantle of best food here. With mock Tudor walls and neo Tuscan frontage it’s a curious mix of styles but the layout does allow plenty of booths and quiet recesses, away from the hubbub of the lobby. Considering this, it’s great for those looking for a more intimate dining experience.

As you would expect, the food is strictly Italian, with staples like beef carpaccio, lasagne and veal escalope. There is even a reasonable vegetarian selection, with selections such as pasta alla Arrabiata and bardine alla pesto to name a couple. A bruschetta amuse bouche was a nice touch, and it had the right balance of acidic tomato with garlic crunch. Torn between lamb chops with rosemary and peppered steak I opted for the bistecca peperone. It really benefitted from the Barolo wine, which gave it a rich sauce, perfectly complementing the meat.

Alternately there is a wide range of pizzas on offer, all with thin crusts and generous toppings. The wine list has a decent selection, much of which is prominently displayed. Anything from Bordeaux through to Argentinian Malbec. Desserts are served on a rotating basis so it’s necessary to check with the kitchen; on my visit there was crème caramel and opera cake amongst others. The remaining restaurants in the Sheraton offer variations on buffets or bar snacks, pleasant enough, but here the bar is a little higher. Dishes are cooked in an open kitchen and served with a little panache. A good spot for a quiet meal for two.
