With fine seafood and gorgeous views across the beach towards the sandy Ile de Ngor, it’s no surprise that the Cabane des Pecheurs is one of our favourite places to eat in Dakar.
Right on Ngor beach and framed on one side by the warm ocean, this relatively refined spot is run by a charming team who also operate a deep-sea fishing business. “There are two kinds of men in this world,” reads a plaque on the wall. “Those who live on the land and those who live at sea.” But the Cabane des Pecheurs manages to happily marry the pleasures of the ocean with top-notch dining on firm land.
We love the Sunday lunches here, for which we recommend booking ahead. Waiters throw colourful fabric over the dining tables and open the floor-to-ceiling windows, letting in Dakar’s famous sea breezes.
Then they’ll bring over a chalkboard transcribed with the day’s specials: expect starters such as fresh lime-drenched calamari salads or platters of Senegalese oysters served with sharp onion confit. For mains, there’s grilled fish of the day, succulent steaks and mixed grills with fat juicy shrimp. And the dessert list is pretty good too.
The Cabane is also open in the evenings, although the sun sets early in Dakar (usually by 7.30), so if you come after dark you’ll miss those spectacular views. To reach it by taxi, head to Ngor beach (Ngor plage in French); the restaurant backs onto the main strip, very close to the car park.
