If you like making a grand entrance, look away now: Khana Khazana is behind an Engen petrol station in the city centre. Not in a vague, hidden-in-a-little-street-nearby way. You literally reach it by walking across the forecourt and down an alley.

But don’t let the lack of glamour put you off. The alley brings you to a garden with a large open kitchen on one side, a thatched dining area on the other, and an arbor screening off the back wall of Engen. Once you’re sipping a beer and enjoying the breeze you’ll have forgotten where you are – on a quiet evening it could be one of the peaceful outdoor restaurants in Labone or Cantonments.

The extensive menu focuses on South Indian food, which is good news for vegetarians, for whom Accra can be a bit of a struggle. Expect a long list of dosas – delicious stuffed pancakes, for the uninitiated – a roster of authentic curries and, somewhat oddly, a few Chinese options. If you’re used to Westernised Indian food, expect to be faced with some unfamiliar dishes; this is the real thing, which is why you’re likely to be sat near a table of Indian diners tucking into thalis.

Fried starters are excellent but come up generous, so avoid grease overload by mixing your pakoras and bhajis with grilled fare like the perfectly cooked fish tikka or hot, crispy-coated Chicken 65. While this is the only place in Accra that serves dosas, it’s worth exploring the rest of the menu too – the paneer butter masala is as good a curry as the city has to offer.

Best of all, Khana Khazana is excellent value. A starter, main and beer can be had for under 20 cedis, which is rare for international food this good.
