Known locally simply as ‘Bamboo House’ this Chinese restaurant is based on Boundary Road, a relatively middle-class suburb popular with the small number of expats based here as well as local business figures and politicians. Here the streets are clean, the gardens well-tended, and the fences high. The building itself is a two-story detached house, and by Benin City standards it’s an upmarket offering, though it’s not going to win any style awards. The interior is basic with the barest of nods towards the Chinese roots of the cuisine; it’s sparse but clean.

Staff are fantastic. Manager Jennifer especially is a genuinely bubbly host, eager to help and overtly friendly. The food is very typical Chinese, and the menu is not huge. It is divided into duck, chicken, beef, pork, and seafood, with three or four dishes in each section. Each dish can be ordered in ‘personal’ size for between N2000-2500 or ‘midi’ size for between N4000-5000. Two personal sizes and rice should suffice for two people.

Outside of the hotel restaurants, Benin City has a real lack of spots where it is possible to take a business colleague or associate out for dinner. Bamboo House fills this niche adequately. It accepts card payments, has a small private dining area for groups, and offers delivery and catering upon request.
