Tucked away above the liveliness of Sphinx square, Kandahar is an example of good taste and great food.

Don’t blink or you will miss the red carpet that Kandahar rolls out for its customers. Leading to a gold glass elevator, first-time guests might have a difficult time locating the entrance to the fourth-floor restaurant. No matter. The guards on the street are used to the hungry wanderer, and will kindly point you in the right direction.

Located on one of the busiest streets in Mohandessin, Kandahar is an unlikely refuge from the noise and stress of Cairo. The layout of the restaurant lends itself to small groups and private conversations. It is tastefully decorated without being pretentious, making it an equally comfortable choice for an evening out with friends or a more formal occasion. This reviewer especially loved the large basin of fresh flowers that greets guests upon arrival.

Dressed all in white, the serving staff lend a highly professional air to the place as they lay out the various dishes with flair.

The menu offers all the standard Indian dishes, from samosas to palak paneer, butter chicken, beef and chicken tikkas, grills, and various curries. For a nice saucy chicken dish over rice, I can recommend the murgh makani. If you are a vegetarian they have a number of tempting options as well.

If spicy food is your game, you will find the kitchen more than willing to adjust the heat to whatever level you desire. However, if you tastes are suited to a tamer palate there are plenty of milder options as well.

For the price, we found it tempting to order several appetizers and main dishes. If you make the same mistake we did and over-order, don’t fret because anything can be packaged for take-away. Only available upon request, take away is common practice in Cairo, so do not be shy to ask.
