Nairobi Java House can be described as “coffee shop meets casual dining,” and with over 25 locations in Kenya, you’ll likely encounter at least one during your stay. Java House offers everything that a standard coffee shop would offer, and a lot more.
I ate at the the branch in Junction Mall with a large group for lunch. The menu had a decent number of offerings and I was surprised that in addition to sandwiches and burgers, they also offered Indian and Mexican-inspired dishes. I tried to find the most local dish on the menu, and decided on the Swahili coconut fish curry with rice and salsa, per my waiter’s recommendation. My meal took a little while to come out given the restaurant being at capacity, but the waiter checked in with us periodically. When it did arrive it was presented very nicely, and I was surprised at the portion size for the price. Unfortunately, the presentation was the only highlight of the dish, which I felt could have been more flavorful, especially for a curry. I left satisfied, but not necessarily wanting more.
The highlight of my lunch at the Java House was the freshly squeezed juices. I’m not a big coffee drinker, so when I saw they had an assortment of juices I got excited! I tried the passion and the minty pineade – both were delicious, refreshing and gone way too fast.
The dining are had the usual ambiance and bustle of any other café, but more open floor plan and nicer décor. This would be a great place to meet friends to catch up, or talk business with colleagues.
