The Hussar Grill is a steakhouse and Cape Town institution that this year celebrated its 50th year serving guests at its original Rondebosch restaurant. It has since opened other popular locations in Green Point, Camps Bay, Willowbridge, Stellenbosch, and Constantia.
The Hussar Grill is a traditional steakhouse with a traditional menu. Diners choose cut and portion size of steaks and whether they would like it served on or off the bone. Additionally, there is a long list of house specialties including fillet béarnaise, Hussar carpetbagger, Madagascan pepper fillet, fillet moutarde, chateaubriand, lamb cutlets, or lamb shank. For a South African twist, opt for a game steak; when I visited, The Hussar offered a selection of wildebeest, ostrich, kudu, or gemsbok.
I sampled a starter of Hollandse bitterballen, a delicious meatball-like Dutch snack of beef, béchamel, and beef jus that is crumbed and deep fried and served with Dijon mustard. For the main course, I tried the very tasty Hussar carpetbagger, a large fillet stuffed with smoked oysters and cheddar cheese and topped with a brandy and mustard sauce. The meat was flavorful, well-cooked, and very tender. Creamed spinach and cinnamon butternut squash for a side was nice. For dessert, I sampled a chocolate ganache tart with strawberries and a vanilla bean ice cream that was pretty standard, but still a nice sweet end to the meal.
The Hussar Grill in Rondebosch is quite small with dark wood paneling and leather upholstery, so the atmosphere is cozy and rich with old-world charm. Reservations are highly recommended. The service was friendly and attentive but not overly so. Besides great steak at a fair price, another excellent feature of The Hussar Grill is that they don’t charge a corkage fee, so you are welcome to bring and enjoy your favorite wine. That said, they do have a large wine list to order from as well.
The Hussar Grill on Rondebosch Main Road is an old-time favourite for locals and meat lovers alike. With a wonderful selection of wine, meats and specials, it’s hard to go wrong in the warm atmosphere. It’s a real upmarket steakhouse with amazing service and professional staff that will make you feel like royalty.
For starters, I ordered the calamari to see how they do seafood. When my dish soon arrived, I was treated to tasty, juicy strips that were deep-fried to perfection. It’s served with a tartar sauce that was so good, I considered having the calamari for mains as well!
When it was time to order mains I was overwhelmed with the choice of classic steakhouse dishes, as well as the South African favourites. As a big fan of bleu cheese and steak, I ordered the bleu cheese sirloin, which consists of a 200 g classic New York cut sirloin steak covered in a subtle bleu cheese sauce and served with chunky, crunchy chips. The waitress did warm me about the subtleness of the sauce, but I could have done with a stronger flavour to accompany the perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth steak. If you’re hungry, I would suggest ordering a bigger steak, as 200 g will leave you wanting more of its wonderful flavour and succulent texture.
For dessert, I had to try the ice cream cake with honeycomb, nuts and chocolate sauce. It was the perfect sweet ending to a delicious and satisfying meal, and I would definitely recommend it. All in all, I loved my dining experience at The Hussar Grill and I can’t wait to go back. It makes a wonderful venue to enjoy celebrations and romantic dates, or simply when you’re in the mood for rich, hearty food.
