At least a dozen bars around the world are named Harry’s Bar (including the most famous one in Venice, Italy, opened in 1931 by bartender Giuseppe Cipriani and a favorite of Ernest Hemingway’s).

The one in the Nyali International Beach Resort, about six miles north of downtown Mombasa, is no older than the hotel (opened in 1946).

It bills itself as a traditional English-style pub, but there’s a Kenyan twist. Instead of the dark wood paneling, carpeted floors and subdued upholstery found in the bars of Great Britain, you’ll see white walls, wide pillars and plenty of light — more typical of British colonial architecture than what you’d find in the United Kingdom.

This part of Kenya is predominantly Muslim, so locals don’t tend to congregate at bars. Instead you’ll find an ever-changing clientele at Harry’s: tourists drawn from the Nyali and other resorts, as well as an expat resident or several.

Harry’s Bar is air conditioned (always a draw in coastal Kenya) and offers a wide range of drinks and snacks. Friday is the best evening to visit, because that’s karaoke night.

The pub is open daily from 5 p.m. until midnight, and from 1 p.m. until midnight on weekends.
