If you are a meat-lover, you will likely enjoy the Green Bamboo Barbecue. Every day between noon and 9pm, it serves up huge skewers (reminiscent of Maasai spears) of barbecued chicken, beef, mutton and pork. (Nyama choma, or grilled meat, is considered a Tanzanian specialty) Those who order the full all-you-can-eat barbecue (about US$15 – it is also possible to order smaller variants) are first served soup and bread rolls. Then the parade of meat begins, with a waiter bringing a skewer of each meat in turn, and dishing generous portions onto diners’ plates. No sooner has one round been polished off than the next one arrives. Seating is either on a large covered, open-air dining patio or at tables in the adjoining garden. It is impossible to go away still hungry. For drinks, there is a modest selection of sodas, juices and mineral water, but no alcohol.

The barbecue is enormously popular, especially on weekend afternoons, when the large, grassy gardens fill with an amenable mix of Tanzanians and foreigners out to enjoy the day. There is a small playground, although the equipment is old and poorly designed (the merry-go-round in particular should be avoided), and children should be carefully supervised.

In addition to the barbecue, it is possible to order from a modest selection of Tanzanian and continental dishes prepared in the adjoining main restaurant. However, if you are seated in the Green Bamboo or garden areas waits for menu items are often extremely long, and the quality of the cuisine is more variable than with the main barbecue.
