Buka is a Yoruba word meaning ‘local restaurant’ and the idea here was to present local food in a more conducive atmosphere. There are other fast food options in Lagos with new branches of Dominos pizza and KFC popping up to complement the Nigerian outlets like Chicken Republic and Tantalizers. Funky Buka is however the most recent and in terms of aesthetics and styling probably the most attractive.
Cool grey walls and simple utilitarian furniture give a clean, minimalist feel. Food is strictly Nigerian with staples like pounded yams, plantain, catfish and goat meat alongside a multitude of stews. It is very popular amongst the middle-class office workers from the surrounding financial district, and offers very good value at roughly N900 a head. It is already expanding in order to provide an evening venue, whilst sponsorship from both Coca Cola and Guinness should mean you could expect to see more branches in the future.
