I fell in love with this place when I visited their website. I’m a Graphic Designer so anything as pretty as this website deserves huge applaud in my books. It’s just lovely. And I knew I had to try it out. Wynberg is also pretty close to me so today we decided to pop them a visit for lunch.
Oh what a gorgeous place. According to their website Four and Twenty Café is the manifestation of a dream born at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, over a box of Parisian macaroons. You can definitely tell this café has these influences as it makes for a beautiful sidewalk café. We actually chose one of the window seats so we can sit and watch the world go by. Next to us was a couple that couldn’t stop kissing, so it was all very romantic.
The menu is very different and they have created some very interesting sounding meals. I went for the Breakfast Sumptuous which was caramelised onions, smashed avocado, Danish feta and a soft poached free range egg finished with balsamic glaze on homemade bread. Oh wow. I would have this again in a heartbeat. My husband went for the Bangkok burger, which was a homemade steamed wasabi and black sesame seed bun, filled with shredded sticky hoisin pork neck and a mixed crunchy julienne of cucumber, leek, spring onion and pickled ginger, served with prawn toast ‘fries’, a homemade shitake ‘ketchup’ and a pile of sea-salt steamed edamame pods. I had a sneaky taste and wow.
What a gorgeous place. I cannot wait to come back! I would highly recommend this place. You can come by yourself, as a couple or in a group and either way you’ll feel right at home. But make a booking, it’s very popular!

Four and Twenty is a café and deli located in the southern suburb of Wynberg. It’s a bit out of the way if you’re based in downtown Cape Town, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the southern suburbs. It’s nestled in amongst other restaurants, and furniture, antique, and décor stores in historic buildings in the quaint Old Wynberg Village, also called Little Chelsea due to the resemblance to the English neighborhood.
Four and Twenty’s food offerings focus on blending the traditional with the unconventional. The menu is about a million pages presented on a clipboard, so deciding what you want from the many appetizing options can be difficult! I stopped in for a weekday lunch and opted to try the “Oriental eggs be-lean”—pan-fried exotic mushrooms, topped with two poached eggs, and Indonesian-umami Hollandaise and pilled with sesame-crusted crispy bacon and buttery Edamame beans. It was totally amazing, especially the umami sauce, and it left me wanting to try the rest of the menu as well. The drunk Wolfe Street pigeon pie, looks particularly interesting—a local craft IPA braised pigeon with pancetta, roasted endive, and hearty prune jus, topped with home-made puff pastry. I also couldn’t resist sampling an almond croissant. It was the real deal and so good! There’s also a milk ‘n cookies option, and the cookies looked amazing.
Service was friendly, but my food took forever to arrive. I think perhaps there was a problem in the kitchen. But there are plenty of magazines and newspapers around to keep you busy while you wait. The atmosphere is really nice with seating in the front room and also in the courtyard. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and there are also so locally made deli items and pantry-fillers on offer. Four and Twenty is definitely worth a visit.

Four & Twenty is known as the dream breakfast spot of Chelsea, Wynberg. The restaurant is upmarket, beautifully decorated and welcoming. The staff are incredibly friendly and visiting Four & Twenty felt like a real treat, especially on a Saturday morning. They serve a great menu of light meals, lunches and breakfasts as well as fresh pasties and cakes. Dishes include local produce and ingredients that make all their meals fresh, seasonal and absolutely delicious. Their menu includes some local favourites like fish and chips, salmon and trout Carpaccio and Oxtail stew pie. They also serve and sell low card and gluten-free breads that you’ll be tempted to buy after your meal.
For brunch, I ordered the Sandwich of the Day which was a toasted olive Panini, Tenterden Children’s Project mustard crest pesto, tomato puree, local mature white cheddar cheese, homemade basil and sping onion marmalade and local cider ham. This decadent sandwich was served with a side salad and was creative, unique and something I highly recommend. The bread was crunchy, the ham was sweet and sticky with perfect balance from the pesto. The ingredient on this sandwich is a great example of true harmony and I can’t wait to try another one of their sandwiches soon.
To drink, I ordered the homemade lemonade which is far better than I could have ever imagined. The lemonade was subtle, not overpowering and wonderfully refreshing. I ordered mine with sparkling water but you can also have it with still water. It’s a great drink for summer if you’re not in the mood for coffee. However, if you are in the mood for coffee, Four & Twenty make fantastic coffee and you should grab a chocolate cookie to go with your after-meal beverage, because they are to-die-for!
