The Foodbarn offers a sophisticated menu in a country setting in the Noordhoek Farm Village. I visited for a weekday lunch, and the atmosphere was very nice—casual and relaxed, but the restaurant was busy. Reservations are recommended.
The à la carte menu focuses on fine dining and is fairly diverse. It has seven options each for starters, mains, and desserts. When I visited, there was a good special offer for the three course meal and an option to add on wine pairing. For starters, I tried the de-shelled prawn fritters with confied tomato, eggplant, and avocado tian served with a red pepper syrup and basil salsa. The prawns and the basil salsa were very good, but the red pepper syrup was a bit sweet for me. For the main course, I had grilled springbok rump, turnip tarte tatin, and wilted spinach in a cinnamon jus. Venison is easy to overcook and difficult to get right, but this springbok was very good. For dessert I tried the lemon posset with strawberry tartare, pea Anglaise, almond brittle, and basil praline ice cream. The presentation was beautiful, but green peas in a dessert didn’t really do it for me. Next time, I would try something a bit more traditional. Service started off great and then fell off slightly as the restaurant got busier. It seemed that they were perhaps just short of staff.
The Foodbarn had a nice vibe and is great for a relaxed lunch with a few glasses of wine. The restaurant is also open for dinner with the same menu. Besides the main restaurant at The Foodbarn, they also run a deli on the other side of the Noordhoek Farm Village, which serves simple meals and sells specialty ingredients. The deli turns into a tapas bar in the evenings. The Village also has several shops to spend some time browsing.
