Although Nairobi’s legendary Carnivore is the standard bearer in the carved-at-your-table, all-you-can-eat restaurant sweepstakes, Fogo Gaucho Churrascaria is the sleeper contender in the category.

A bit less touristy, a bit more gourmet, a bit more elegant, this typical Brazilian steakhouse serves up at least 15 cuts of meat and more than 20 different salads in a distinctive setting that retains a bit of the character of its roots in the German and Italian immigration to southern Brazil a century ago.

And, salads? This is the place to satisfy your craving for something fresh, crisp and green. The 20-some selections are arrayed before you at the salad bar, which also includes cheese, smoked ham and salami. The trick is to save room for the grill-roasted meats, each variety brought to your table on a skewer by a waiter in gaucho garb.

Each diner has a card that’s red on one side, green on the other. Green-side-up signals the waiter to bring on the meat (and it will keep coming if the green is showing). Choices include the standards: chicken legs, beef and pork sausages, sirloin steak, lamb shoulder, beef with garlic and pork ribs, but also camel hump, crocodile and maybe grilled prawns (a selection that seems to disappear fast).

Need a break? Turn the card to red. You can flip back and forth until you can’t eat another bite. Except for the signature dessert, of course. You’ll definitely want to try the grilled pineapple with cinnamon.

A bustling, noisy restaurant, this isn’t the place for a romantic dinner for two. It’s especially popular with families and large groups (there’s always someone celebrating a birthday).
