Erawan Thai restaurant in Little Chelsea, Wynberg is the perfect place for a relaxing and tranquil meal of classic Thai dishes. The restaurant is situated on a dark road and makes for a great romantic and intimate venue. Come hungry because the menu sounds so appealing, you’re going to want to enjoy three courses, at least. Erawan Thai serve a wide menu of starters, dim sum, curry, stir fries, noodles, vegetarian and of course, the chef’s specials. You’ll have plenty of time to decide on what to eat while you’re crunching away on the complimentary prawn crackers.
For starters, I chose the crispy wontons, as I’m not a big fan of dim sum and I wanted to try something new. Filled with the most delicious minced chicken I’ve ever tasted, Erawan’s wontons are absolutely incredible and a must-have! Fried to perfection, texturally pleasing and with layers of flavour like you wouldn’t believe, you’ll have to try it for yourself. For mains I got adventurous with the prawns cashew on the “chef’s specials” menu. My dish included six out-of-the-shell queen prawns in a light curry sauce with garlic, coriander, roasted cashews and fresh veggies. I love noodles so I ordered some egg fried noodles on the side, and I’m really glad I did. The salty-sweet noodles soaked up all the delicious curry sauce and made for an excellent meal indeed. I’d definitely argue that Erawan serves the best Thai food in the southern suburbs.
I was excited to try the sticky rice pudding with coconut milk, lychees and sesame seeds for dessert. When it arrived at the table, I couldn’t wait to tuck in. It was sweet, moist and oh, so delicious! The lychee was a fresh and sour taste that went perfectly with the sweetness of the rice. I couldn’t suggest a better dessert to cure your sweet tooth, but if rice for dessert isn’t your thing, Erawan has a few great options to choose from like pineapple fritters and chocolate spring rolls. The next time you’re in the mood for Thai, go to Erawan for great service, authentic food and a ton of great choices!

Erawan Thai is located in the southern suburb of Wynberg, so it’s a bit out of the way from downtown Cape Town, but it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in that area. It’s nestled in amongst other shops and restaurants in historic buildings in the quaint Old Wynberg Village, also called Little Chelsea due to its resemblance to the English neighborhood.
The restaurant is very nicely decorated and is on the formal side compared to most other Thai options in town. The wait staff is very friendly and helpful and dressed in beautiful traditional Thai clothing. The menu offers a very wide variety of options including: dim sum; traditional Thai starters; soups; green, red, massaman, and penang curries; stir fries; and Thai rice and noodle dishes. The “Chef’s Specials” section also includes popular crispy duck, crispy pork, and steamed or fried fish and vegetables.
I opted for the prawn and cashew curry, also a chef’s specialty, which consisted of six queen prawns out of the shell in a light curry sauce with garlic, coriander, roasted cashew nuts, and fresh vegetables. All dishes can be ordered mild, medium, hot, or Thai style (which I assume means very hot)—the medium was plenty hot enough for me! The prawns were huge, very tender, and perfectly cooked, and the curry was just right. I’m definitely keen to go back and sample some more of the menu! The banana fritter on the dessert menu caught my eye, but I was too full to give it a try.
If you want to visit Erawan Thai for dinner, make sure to get a reservation ahead of time. It’s a local favorite, and is generally fully booked every night. Lunch is a bit more forgiving, but it’s not a bad idea to call ahead and check. If you find that it is full, you can also order take out.
