I visited Engruna Eatery in Sea Point for the first time on a weeknight and was surprised to see how busy the recently opened eatery was. The rustic yet modern décor of the bar/restaurant adds a great deal of atmosphere to your dining experience there. Engruna have become known for their great homemade burgers, pizzas and craft beer on tap. They also serve a wonderful selection of tapas that really satisfy your needs after a long work day.
For starters, I ordered the sweetcorn, peppers and feta quesadilla. The presentation was simple, yet appetizing and I couldn’t believe the amount of flavour in the quesadilla. It was a big portion for a starter as well and would’ve been easily shared between two.
For mains, I had a hard time deciding between a burger and a pizza. I decided to try the pizza because Engruna has a wood-fired oven so I was intrigued. I ordered a Margherita pizza with a gluten-free base and extra roasted vegetables. The pizza was absolutely delicious. It was very authentic and I could barely even tell that it was gluten-free. Well done, Engruna!
For dessert, I had to try the cookies and cream milkshake topped with two halves of an Oreo. I must say, this shake was one for the books! If you’re looking for the ultimate milkshake-burger or milkshake-pizza combo, Engruna has everything you’re looking for and offers a great dining experience for hip locals and tourists.
What more can I say?! You have to check out Engruna Eatery for yourself!

I have been past Egruna a few times and on two occasions tried to get a table at lunch time; on both occasions it was full. Today, by chance, I found myself next door to the restaurant at 3.30pm. I realized it was midway between lunch and dinner time, so there should be space, and there was — only three tables occupied at the time. I took a look at the chalkboards at the entrance, a fairly restricted menu with mainly burgers, pizza, and a small tapas selection. On the previous attempts at getting a table, I noticed pizza seemed the meal of choice — a little odd as Egruna does not seem obviously Italian.
I took a look through the menu, the tapas selection did not appeal to me at the time and I was not really up for a burger – pizza it would be. I chose the chorizo and mushroom salami. It comprises chorizo, salami, black mushrooms, white mushrooms, two cheeses, grilled baby tomato and rocket. It comes with a thin base.
Wow, that base was quite unlike any other I have had: thin and crispy. It cracked like thin glass when cut.
It turned out to be a pizza like no other. I realize why the restaurant is always full and pizza appears the meal of choice. The flavours were authentic, each ingredient easily identifiable by taste alone. Service was good and the meal very well priced.
Egruna is most definitely worthy of stopping by when in Sea Point and looking for something very very tasty at a good price. Given the outstanding quality of the pizza, I’m almost disappointed I didn’t try the tapas — but that day will come soon.

Engruna is a Sea Point eatery a little more than a year old, offering gourmet wood-fired pizzas, burgers, local craft beer and wines, and milkshakes. It’s a small dining room that pours out onto a nice balcony overlooking busy Main Road in Sea Point.
They’ve got thirteen delicious sounding burgers on the menu, including lots of beef varieties, one with chorizo, an ostrich option, plus fish, pork, chicken, vegetarian, and vegan. They’ve also got a host of interesting pizzas focusing on fresh ingredients and unique flavor combinations. There are a few salad and snack options as well. Milkshakes on offer include toasted marshmallow, cookies and cream, and banana and booze. The concept of the restaurant is really great and atmosphere and branding is excellent. Unfortunately, the food and service needs the same attention to detail.
I tried the classic mushroom burger, a beef patty with a grilled brown mushroom, gorgonzola cheese, and a homemade relish of pickles and peppers. I added on the parmesan and truffle fries and coleslaw as sides. The food took a bit long to arrive, and the server came to apologize, saying something about the fryer not yet being to the proper temperature due to building renovations. No problem, but when it arrived, the food was disappointing. The presentation was great and everything looked amazing. But, the burger was pretty average. It was good, but nothing that special for the price. The fries were a little soggy and bland, despite the wait for the correct fryer temperature. The coleslaw was creamy, but not tangy and not crisp. It wasn’t really to my taste. Although there were only a few tables’ worth of guests for the weekday lunch hour, service was pretty slow and inattentive, although the staff was perfectly friendly and helpful when they did come around. Hopefully, I just caught them at a bad time due to their renovations.

Engruna Eatery is a wonderful little restaurant in Sea Point with a limited menu that offers maximum flavour. I quite liked the fact that their menu was so small because it’s obvious that they take pride in all the items on the menu, rather than having a large menu with substandard food. They offer homemade burgers, gourmet pizzas and salads. They also have a great selection of craft beers, wine and milkshakes, and the beers are proudly displayed on the main wall for everyone to see.
I was very impressed with this place. The waiters were so friendly and with the wine flowing throughout the night we ended up staying for hours without hassles.
It was just myself and my husband so we decided to choose the antipasti platter to share as a starter. This was a selection of meats, mushrooms, cheese, olives, dips, artichokes and focaccia. It was a great way to start the evening.
For the main I chose the Three Way Pizza, which was Italian sausage, brown mushroom and marinated artichokes on napolitana base with mozzarella and herbs. My husband went for the Salami, chorizo, fine beans, confit cherry tomatoes and caramelised onions. We split them in half and shared. Delicious. The pizzas are rectangular in shape and are thin and crispy which is the way I personally like my pizza to be. Their selection of pizzas is huge and their burger selection even bigger so be prepared to sit undecided for quite a while. It would be the type of place you could go in a big group and order a whole variety of pizzas to share, that way you could figure out what your favourite is and know what to order the next time!
Highly recommended.
