The recently opened Kada Plaza is by far the most modern shopping complex in Benin City. It has proven extremely popular, and on weekends it’s packed to the rafters with locals enjoying their downtime. The complex comprises a multiplex cinema screening Hollywood blockbusters, “Kung Fu’s” Chinese restaurant, an indoor arcade, “Jumps” an indoor bumper kart rink, and Eliot’s.
Of the food on offer at Kada, Eliot’s is probably the best. It has a pretty long list of continental options; burgers, pastas, salad, and shwarma (between N1700 to N2500) as well as options from the grill; chicken, beef, or prawns (N4-5000), and a fully stocked bar.
Decor is clean and modern, staff are efficient and chatty, and in one corner there are a couple of pool tables with local sharks vying affably for dominance. The best time to come is on Sundays when the bar screens live English premiership matches (almost a religion in its own right here). During a match, the atmosphere is impassioned as supporters excitedly cheer on their clubs.
It’s also a fascinating spot to watch Nigeria’s burgeoning middle class. Mum and dad sit and chat, whilst the kids play on iPads before departing for the cinema upstairs. It doesn’t have the riotous chaos of the street, but it is a fun spot.
