‘Double Four’ is another Lebanese offering on Awolowo Rd. The slightly shabby exterior is I’m afraid carried through into the interior, which itself is only slightly improved by copious use of plastic plants. It is also entirely devoid of natural light making it a slightly troglodytic experience. Mainly frequented by Lebanese with a smattering of ex-pats it certainly isn’t the spot for a high-level business meeting but for those bussing between venues or on a tight schedule it does offer air-conditioning and a quiet spot in which to eat and regroup. The menu is part Lebanese, part western with a decent range of pizzas, pastas and burgers. It does serve wine but with no choice beyond ‘red’ or ‘white’ you would be better sticking to soft drinks or bottled beers. The front of the restaurant seems to the gathering point for the Lebanese owners and their friends, they sit and chat affably whilst sipping sweetened tea. The actual work is left to elderly waiter ‘Beautiful’ who is probably the smartest thing here. Impeccably dressed in black suit and tie he is part waiter part funeral director by appearance but extremely charismatic once the ice is broken. What ‘Double Four’ offers in droves is reasonable value (around N3500 a head). It’s a good option for those on a tighter budget, frustrated with overpriced hotel food, or without the time to head across the bridge to the restaurants of Victoria Island. My Philly steak had the right balance of steak and onions whilst the cheese was oozing from the sides, as it should be. Chips were steaming hot and probably the best in the area. It’s easy to see why this place remains popular despite the insalubrious air. (Branches also in Lagos airport and V.I.)
