As a planned city, Abuja lacks a real centre with a density of shops and restaurants. The district of Wuse 2 is as close as it comes. Here merchants and residents rub shoulders, and there is a more diverse range of shops and eateries.

De Maria is on Aminu Kano, a broad crescent that traverses Wuse 2. It’s an Italian offering in the genuine sense that it was opened here two years ago by an expat from Rome. As you arrive in the restaurant, you’ll find the deli counter well stocked with cured meats, anti pasti and cheeses, with the remaining walls covered in premium spirits, a good range of wines, and other consumables. Behind the deli, occupying the remainder of the first floor is the dining area, tastefully furnished with Sophia Loren and Italian cafe prints.

In terms of menu, Da Maria shows its true Italian roots with classics like vongole, scallopine a la Milanese and polpette. Much care has been taken to import real Italian ingredients, and the food is excellent. One complaint levelled at Da Maria’s is that the portions are small. Whilst it is necessary to perhaps order a side dish as an accompaniment to a main meal, those used to European dining will probably find portion size satisfactory. As an Italian restaurant run by an Italian in the middle of Abuja, it has to be a good bet for the best Italian food in the city.
