As the name suggests, Captain Hook’s is a seafood restaurant that is designed to look like what you’d imagine—the inside of a pirate’s ship. This German-owned spot is the place to go in the Sekondi-Takoradi area for the best seafood and grill options. It was once related to a restaurant of the same name in Accra, but they are now each separate entities.
Prices here are steep in Ghana cedis, but in translation, a main dish is about US$20. Menu items include, garlic prawn, steak, gigantic lobsters, pizza (surprisingly) and more. They also have a good-sized wine list. I’m not a big shellfish eater, but the lobsters and prawns that I saw being brought to people’s tables almost changed my mind. They were freakishly large and looked buttery and delicious. I didn’t see anyone complaining, so I can assume they tasted as good as they looked.
I ended up going with stuffed grouper, which came with potatoes, and had a very filling, satisfying meal. People who want to keep the party going should traipse into the appropriately named Hemingway’s Bar, which is part of Captain Hook’s, for drinks. This is a major attraction for tourists and expats, so the people watching and/or mingling will always be interesting. I met some MIT students who were in town to teach a few seminars on solar paneling, just to give you an example of the types of interesting personalities you may come across. Captain Hook’s is open from 6pm-1am and there’s free wi-fi too.
