This small bar and nightclub is located on Atekong Drive near the Ndidem Iso Junction. A series of low-slung canvas awnings and outside bar sit at one end of the tarmacked plot, whilst a small air-conditioned nightclub sits towards the front.
Though it’s fairly quiet during the day and weekday nights when sleepy staff can make bar food and snacks upon request, at the weekends the bar area livens up and the nightclub runs until the early hours. It’s a popular spot with locals and is effectively a slightly more organised version of the popular ‘car wash’ type streetside bars and clubs prevalent all over southern Nigeria. Locals drink Star beer and dance to a pumping soundtrack of Naija hip-hop and R&B. The outside bar has a relaxed, friendly vibe, and locals are generally overtly friendly. In the club the atmosphere is a little headier — still friendly, but harder to make conversation. Friday and Saturday nights are especially busy, as locals let off steam after the working week.
It’s generally a happening nightspot and convenient for the short walk to the Ndidem Iso Junction where the long standing ‘Monic pointe’ roadside bar serves a roaring trade from the early evenings into the night. Here roadside sellers, locals and passers by all converge to sit under corrugated awnings, eat, drink cool beer and pass the time. It’s a good spot to get a feel for relaxed Calabar street life, there is none of the aggression of the Lagos street here, and apart from the occasional gentle inquiry from passing food hawkers, people are happy to meet you, relax and make small talk.
