Blowfish is an upscale seafood restaurant located just as you turn off the West Coast Road towards Bloubergstrand. It’s situated in a complex with the Dolphin Beach Hotel and has an amazing view over Table Bay to Cape Town Central and Table Mountain. Watching hundreds of kite surfers darting along the beach is one of the most spectacular sites. Sunset from Blowfish is an awesome view.

Blowfish’s menu centers on seafood and sushi and you can order from the menu, grab sushi from the rotating conveyor belt, or talk to the fishmonger at the fish counter to choose a selection from the available seafood options. When I visited, it happened to be during a power outage, an increasingly frequent occurrence in South Africa. Blowfish was ready with a special “load shedding” menu of dishes they could prepare without electricity. I sampled the Thai green prawn curry which turned out to be quite a thick curry of small, de-shelled prawns, red cabbage, white cabbage, and carrots. The sauce was slightly separated and didn’t look fantastically appealing. The flavors were good, but it was nothing too special. I also sampled some sushi from the conveyor belt, which was pricey, but very tasty and beautifully presented.

Although the atmosphere at Blowfish was quite nice, even with no electricity, the service was terrible. Our waitress seemed rather annoyed to have to take time to wait on us at all, and her attitude was not very friendly. She didn’t bother to explain any of the options available, so we only found out you could order fresh seafood from the seafood counter beyond what was on the menu after we heard the neighboring table’s waitress explain it for them. I definitely would have ordered something else if I had known that was an option. The restaurant has the potential to be amazing, but considering the food and service, it’s overpriced.

I’d heard a lot of good things about Blowfish Restaurant. Cape Town has a lot of very good fish restaurants but I heard that this one was definitely one of the best. I was reluctant to try because it’s quite pricey and I don’t often venture out to Tableview. One night, however, we were invited and we decided to give it a try. We arrived early so we quickly popped down to the beach, which is only about a kilometre away, and sat and watched the waves. Tableview has one of the best views of Table Mountain so it’s always so nice to spend some time there.

Blowfish Restaurant is so pretty. The building itself looks like a pyramid from the outside, and inside the setting is beautiful with a gorgeous view of the sea.

We went straight to the sushi menu and started to place our order. Our waiter was new and seemed to have difficulty understanding how the sushi ordering worked, and when my food eventually arrived I was disappointed to see that the order was completely wrong. I was so hungry that I didn’t bother to change it because the food took very long to arrive and I didn’t want to wait any longer. I called the waiter over to make sure I didn’t get charged for something that I didn’t order. He was very apologetic and assured me I wouldn’t. As soon as I tasted the sushi I didn’t really care anyway… it was delicious and so fresh. I absolutely loved it.

I can’t even really fault the staff for one error, because other than that they were so incredibly attentive and sweet. By far some of the best staff I have ever seen.

Afterwards we ordered Americanos which were delicious and strong and came with a huge biscuit.

The bill was very high and I’m not used to paying so much for sushi. But if you want to treat yourself I would definitely recommend it.
