Arnold’s on Kloof Street is known for their great, value for money breakfasts where the who’s who of the Cape Town creative scene connect to the wifi and enjoy a delicious coffee over some yummy breakfast options that won’t break the bank. But Arnold’s also serves fabulous lunch and dinner dishes that will have you wanting to come back for every meal. The service at Arnold’s is wonderful and their new hi-tech tablets make everything more efficient. I was really impressed when I visited the restaurant on a late weekday morning and enjoyed their cooling mist and vibey atmosphere. They also offer a selection of freshly baked cakes and have two outdoor sections, smoking and non-smoking, as well as a big indoor area which is great for dinner or those colder winter months.

For breakfast, I ordered the Eggs Benedict served on two slices of homemade English muffin loaf with bacon, free range poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Wow! The English muffin loaf was delicious and so different to anything I’ve seen before. The eggs were perfect and I love that it was served with bacon so I didn’t have to order my own. The hollandaise was average, but all in all what a delicious breakfast and really cheap too. I also ordered Pomegranate juice which has an interesting sour taste that was really refreshing and enjoyable on a hot morning.

With my breakfast, I enjoyed a delicious cappuccino that hit the spot and was great quality and value for money. Arnold’s serves all day breakfast but they also have a full menu full of amazing pastas, salads, burgers, wild meat dishes and seafood. The casual and laid back atmosphere at Arnold’s fits in perfectly with the vibe of The Cape. The whole of Cape Town loves Arnold’s and once you visit it, so will you! Guaranteed!

Arnold’s is a warm and appealing little restaurant set on vibey Kloof Street just across from the Mount Nelson Hotel. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a modern but inviting dining room and a nice patio overlooking the street with amazing views of Table Mountain. Arnold’s specialty is game meat, and for that reason, it’s a firm favorite with tourists looking to try something different. They also have more traditional options to satisfy the less adventurous.

I went with a friend for a casual weeknight dinner and opted for the waitress’s recommendation to try the game platter. The platter consisted of a little bit of everything—warthog ribs, crocodile curry, ostrich fillet, gemsbok fillet, and potato wedges and stir fried vegetables. It was a great option to sample a lot of different meats and it was a ton of food! I also got to sample my dining companion’s gemsbok Wellington—a fillet of gemsbok wrapped in bacon and puff pastry served atop sautéed veggies and mashed potatoes. Everything was really tasty. The meat was nicely cooked and flavorful. Most of it was a little on the tough side, but that’s often par for the course with game meat. We both agreed with the waitress that the warthog ribs were the best.

Besides game meat, Arnold’s is also known for its good value breakfasts. I haven’t been yet for breakfast, but it appears to be very popular. The menu is pretty standard, but it throws in some interesting twists, like ostrich wors instead of normal sausage. The other thing Arnold’s is known for is the cake specials. They have a wide variety of cakes and other items such as the tempting deep fried Bar One candy bar with ice cream, but after our huge dinner, we were too full to try any dessert. Ambiance is great with the nice view of the mountain. The service was very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Our waitress provided a lot of helpful guidance on the menu.

Arnold’s is one of many places I have been past but never been into, despite constantly hearing good things about the restaurant.

So the other day I found myself across the road from Arnold’s at around 9am, moderately hungry. “This is it – it’s time”, I thought to myself.

I went in and the inside area was a little full, but being a little breezy, there were a couple of tables available on the patio. Always preferring an outside table, the choice was clear.

The breakfast menu was quite limited, but what does one have for breakfast anyway? I’m usually happy with cereal and coffee. For some reason, when it comes to ordering food, my eyes tend to be bigger than my stomach. I was tempted to order the “double free-range breakfast” but sanity prevailed and I opted for “Mikes free-range breakfast”, but requested mushrooms as an extra.

Mikes free-range comprises two free-range eggs, two strips of bacon, ostrich wors (sausage), two slices of grilled tomato and toast. I’m glad I did not go for the double – I would not have been able to finish it.

Everything was good — better than good — although the ostrich sausage seemed a little fatty inside the skin – unusual for ostrich. The coffee was really good, and I skipped the toast and jam.

The staff are superb — attentive and friendly. I have certainly had better breakfasts, but certainly never, ever one that cost only R63 – including the extra mushrooms and coffee.

Arnold’s offers exceptional value. I cannot think of any place that can beat this, even the massive franchise outlets with the fodder they offer up. Arnold’s will certainly be a restaurant I return to for both lunch and dinner in the near future.

If you are looking for a good breakfast venue that offers up good food at an unbelievable price, look no further.
