From its name, you’d expect Aladdin’s menu to be packed with Middle Eastern cuisine. But by holding the menu, diners step onto a magic carpet and are taken on a Continental culinary journey with the opportunity to sample various countries’ cuisines.

To get there, you have to go off the beaten path and onto Kiambu Road, 25 minutes away from the Nairobi Central Business District, toward Ridgeways junction.

A gate opens to a lush green parking lawn laced with geraniums set in front of the Tuscan yellow exterior of the establishment. The welcoming entrance leads to the main dining area, which appears gloomy with poor natural light, but this is compensated for by the patio dining area that’s surrounded with green foliage and a bird sanctuary.

The décor, featuring low chic wooden chairs and tables dressed in beige and black, is simplistic and creative. Thick-striped bright yellow and orange Arabic tent fabric serves as the patio roofing, accentuating the décor, and adding to Aladdin’s cozy feel.

Pork is very popular item here, but other meats, such as beef fillet, chicken saté, and red snapper meuniere are also available.

I started off with some potato wedges then directed my flying carpet to Italy to have some Tagliatelle Alfredo pasta toasted with onions, cottage cheese and cream and mushrooms, all washed down with a glass of Vella Rosé house wine. The Alfredo sauce incorporated a generous serving of melt-in-the-mouth mushrooms whose earthy flavor was complimented by loads of black pepper.

Wine connoisseurs may be a bit disappointed by the scarcity of house wines, which are is limited to only five.

Service is prompt and efficient. You wouldn’t expect it to be any different considering the low traffic of diners. The service and small number of patrons make it ideal for business people and couples wishing to have some exclusivity.

The price range might be a bit high for the average youth, giving Aladdin a mature vibe albeit in a homely setup.
