Also set in Maitama, though not in the uber-exclusive embassy district, Al Basha has a Mediterranean villa frontage complete with terracotta tiled stone courtyard, fringed by wild fig tree and a gently burbling water feature. Passing through the courtyards doors into the restaurant reveals the rough stone-effect walls, dappled in light from stained glass windows. Middle eastern brass work, amphora, and cartwheel lamps staged around a large internal water feature all add to the feel that you are in a Grenadian cave or Moroccan souk rather than the high savanna of Abuja. It’s a well-known local spot popular with NGO’s and locals alike, especially at lunchtimes. It doesn’t have the star chef or refined atmosphere of Chez Victor for example, but it does serve excellent Lebanese food: tabbouleh, hummus, shwarma, and falafel alongside proper dark, thick Lebanese coffee. Blu Cabana is the other spot in Abuja for good Lebanese food, and whilst the food is comparable in both places, Blu cabana has an air of exclusivity and style, whereas Al Basha feels like your favourite local restaurant. It’s good food, pleasant service, and good value for Abuja, making it a great spot for a brief lunch or dinner for a larger group.
