The Voyager Beach Resort has a gimmick. It pretends to be a ship “berthed” just north of Mombasa — the staff are “crew” and the customers are “passengers” who stay in nautically themed guest rooms called “cabins”. Each evening, the Voyager “docks” in a different location (that is, the buffet dinner and the entertainment program are coordinated with and inspired by the night’s locale).
This all-inclusive resort is a hit with families because in addition to the non-stop food, there are myriad activities (some included, some costing extra) for all ages. While the adults relax poolside with their “locally branded alcoholic drinks”, the kids are off exploring with the resort’s Adventurers’ Club. There are opportunities for archery, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, canoeing and diving lessons for all ages.
It’s right on the Indian Ocean, but if you don’t want to face the salt water surf, you can swim in one of the fresh water pools. The only downside? It’s due for a bit of updating. My room was a bit worn around the edges.
The Voyager has an extensive gift shop, a separate bookstore with Kenya-centric titles, a health center and beauty salon. It also has a roster of guides and drivers so that you can arrange not only transit to and from the airport, but also off-resort activities. Upon my arrival, I met with Raymond Jembe to set up a full schedule of sightseeing in and around Mombasa for the next day. Although not employed by the Voyager, he was one of their vetted subcontractors and used a resort-owned vehicle to provide transportation.
Voyager is about six miles north of central Mombasa, and adjacent to Haller Park (with its nature trails, wildlife refuges and butterfly garden). Rooms are about 13,000 KES, including three meals.
