Dar Es Salaam can be an incredibly expensive city when it comes to accommodation. A hefty bill accompanies most of the larger hotels in town, while very little value for money is found in the lower price brackets. Fortunately you don’t need to avoid hotels at all costs if you are being a budget-conscious traveller.

Tucked away behind a green gate in the central suburb of Oyster Bay is Triniti Guest house Bed and breakfast, run by three sisters who have found a space in the market for high-value, clean and cheap accommodation. With 12 guest rooms sealed off behind manicured gardens, Triniti is safe, affordable, and as neat as a pin.

The rooms are simple, with mosquito nets, small bar fridges, air conditioning, small showers, sitting areas, and enough cupboard space to unpack for a few days. Three of the rooms include kitchenettes — which is great for those planning on a long stay — and there is free wi-fi in the communal areas. A fantastic on-site restaurant serves up delicious mishkaki (grilled meat skewers) and fresh finely chopped kombachuri (tomato, onion and spices) salad. You will notice a lot of locals stopping in for a bite to eat and for good reason: the plates are well-proportioned and well-priced, and the food is consistently good.

The easy access location in one of the more upmarket areas of Dar Es Salaam means this guesthouse cannot be beat, with everything you will need from shopping to eating out all within a few minutes tuk-tuk from the front gate. The only thing to be aware of is that on Friday nights the bar area turns into a very loud nightclub with partying and music, which on occasion continues late into the night. Surprisingly the rooms are still kept very private and if you have some good earplugs or it is a slow night you won’t be disturbed at all. Failing that, there is nothing better than grabbing a cold beer and joining in on the fun.
