Part of the boutique Legacy Hotel Group based in South Africa, the Wheatbaker has a well-deserved reputation for impeccable styling and attention to detail. That does of course come at a price – one night here can set you back twice as much as would a more economical option elsewhere in the city.
That being said, you can see where the money has been spent. The lobby overlooks a chic swimming pool, which despite being set in an interior courtyard, still manages to look inviting. The artwork behind the reception desk is an example of chic “up-cycling,” where industrial tin has been re-worked into something infinitely more stylish.
The rooms could happily grace an interiors magazine in London or Milan: hardwood panels are inlaid with stainless steel, headboards are faux metal and the mix of leather, fabrics and stone give an overall feel of style and sophistication. Bathrooms maintain the same high standard: pull back the glazed door and a generous bathtub, wet room/shower and single sink reveal themselves. But what really makes this place stand apart from its competitors are the little extras, like fresh lilies by the bathtub, a full range of DSTV channels, and stocked Nespresso machines in the rooms.
The gym set on the first floor overlooks the pool area and the equipment is of a high standard. On the ground floor the chic marble-floored bar and breakfast rooms boast equally high standards of both food and beverages. There are a couple of small bar/boardroom conference facilities on the first floor for up to 50 persons, and a small business centre on the ground floor with PCs and a printer. Staff are exceptionally polite and conversational, and always on hand to help or proffer service.
Part of the Wheatbaker’s appeal lies in its location: Set amongst the exclusive gated communities and leafy private residences of Ikoyi, it is a genuine oasis in the chaos of Lagos.
