Pemba is unique compared to its neighboring islands. Where the more popular Zanzibar has a constant march of tourists streaming in, Pemba is only just coming into its own as a beach and diving destination. Quieter and without the marks of mass tourism, you arrive after a long, bumpy journey though the Ngezi Forest and villages to be greeted by sweeping 180-degree views of the ocean, over the hilltops, and out to sea. It is something that you will be very hard-pressed to tear yourself away from.

Plush Swahili-inspired decorations fill relaxing reading nooks, where you can hide away in private, indulging in an array of the delicious cocktails of the day. Opt for the Superior Garden rooms and seafront villas, as they are air-conditioned and have more space than the standard rooms; even though they are basically decorated, you wont be spending too much time in the rooms, but rather under an umbrella along the semi private beach, in the massive pool on the hilltop, or cozying up next to a loved one on a day bed by the waves. If you are looking for something different you can also spend a night in the famously unique underwater room: your own private island in the ocean where you can fall asleep surrounded by passing marine life. Just bring some seasick tablets if you are not accustomed to the ebb and sway of the ocean.

The island itself has limited accommodation options and the travelling distances between the three best hotels on the island can be long and expensive, so once you arrive at your chosen resort don’t expect to move around very easily. Whether you are planning hours of beach bumming or combining it with excursions around the island, the all-inclusive resort has a wide variety of activities to keep you occupied if you so choose. Kayak along the coastline, explore the forest, learn about the local community or try your hand at snorkeling and diving on the nearby reefs.

Nothing is ever too much for the locally trained staff at Manta resort, and everyone will go above and beyond when it comes to making the most out of your stay as you slow down, switch off and become a part of island life.
