One of the more popular beach destinations in Kenya, Diani beach is blessed with large stretches of perfect white sands and warm tropical waters. While it can be particularly crowded in high season, The Maji Hotel has carved out an intimate and luxurious corner of this seaside destination in a very unique way.

The Swahili word “maji” means “water,” and the minute you walk though the beautifully carved wooden doors of this boutique hotel you are surrounded by lush palm fringed gardens and a massive, unusual winding swimming pool that encircles the entire property. Spend your days making the most of the sumptuous beach beds underneath the palms that lead down into the ocean, then dip in and out of the refreshing, curved pool or lounge by the Maji Moto Bar sipping on home-specialty cocktails.

Inside the spacious and beautifully Swahili-styled house are 15 individually designed rooms, where some face the garden while others have views that stretch over the trees and out towards the ocean, one even with its own private jacuzzi. If you have the budget the superior rooms are well worth the upgrade as they are spacious and well appointed with large beds, mosquito nets, air conditioning and some with lovely patios that allow you to dine in romantic privacy if you so wish. The food is a wonderful mix of Swahili and European styles, with generous portions and a great wine list, with a focus on fresh locally sourced ingredients.

The real stand out about the Maji is not just its quiet and peaceful location, but its incredible staff. Nothing is too much for Franscesca and her team, and they will go out of their way to make your stay as memorable and comfortable as they can — the guest is really king at the Maji. Waiters are ever attentive without being over powering, and with their no-dress-code policy and no strict dining times you are left to while away your beach days effortlessly relaxing — all the while knowing that your every need is taken care of.
