In kiSwahili “Pole Pole” translates to “slowly, slowly”, a very apt name for a lodge that is all about disconnecting from the outside world and taking life easy.

Located in a beautiful section of Mafia Island, this small, intimate luxury eco-lodge is built into a sloping hillside overlooking the incoming tide of Chole Bay and the spectacular diving of Mafia Island marine park.

From the minute you step through the shaded gates of the property, the staff ensures that time becomes inconsequential, as you dictate the pace of your days. Meals are scheduled at your choosing and the staff are attentive yet discreet, making it a absolute must for anyone on their honeymoon or looking for some island romance in their life.

Each of the seven thatch-roofed bungalows scattered amid the coconut palms are spacious, comfortable and understated, with natural ventilation to provide relief during the humid nights and soft, elegant Swahili-styled antique furniture and décor. A real attraction are the beautiful verandahs with day beds and chairs that allow you complete privacy if you so wish. (As one of the smaller resorts of the island Pole Pole values the privacy of its guests very highly.)

At high tide the beach space can be limited but that would be the perfect time to retreat into your bungalow and spend the hours relaxing around the shaded swimming pool or taking advantage of the onsite spa. If you are able to tear yourself from the sun loungers on the intimate beach between the mangroves, venture up to the main lodge to enjoy the excellent cuisine, a mixture of Italian and Swahili, along with some of their signature cocktails for a perfect sunset evening.

Pole Pole Lodge is definitely the place to come if you want to escape from it all in beautiful, uncomplicated surrounds.
