If you are looking for a rustic adventure with no frills then Pemba Lodge, on Shamiani Island just a short boat ride from the main island of Pemba, is a good-mid level option. But be warned: to get there at low tide you are going to have to walk through some mud and along a village pathway in the heat — so ditch the heels and long pants.

Eco lodges are not for everyone, and Pemba Lodge will not meet everyone’s expectations. Some will adapt well to life on this isolated island, where light comes from solar-powered battery torches and there are few places to charge up your devices. But others might be disappointed.

The bungalows are kept very neat and clean, utilizing the shape of the roof to direct natural airflow through the structure. This keeps the rooms very cool in winter, but they can be stifling in the summer heat if there is no wind. Composting toilets and rather basic hot rainwater showers complete the overall feel with simple décor made from reclaimed wooden dhows and colorful kangas.

The food is rather hit and miss, varying between perfectly decent to downright inedible, depending on what the chef has handy. Prices are not inclusive of alcoholic beverages, which can be in short supply.

But where the ball is sometimes dropped the lodge makes up for it with staff who are incredibly eager and keen to make you comfortable. Also on the upside is the incredible privacy, as only 14 guests can be on the island at any given time in the five standard bungalows and one larger family bungalow. The spectacular beach, which Hawksbill and green turtles use as a nesting site, stretches from the balconies all the way into the bay. So the resort is perfect if you are into watersports and keen on observing local wildlife.

Keep in mind that the island is isolated, so if you are planning a five-day stay and realize that this might not be for you, it will be a costly excursion.
