Oakwood Park is located a little bit away from the hustle of Victoria Island, near Lekki Phase 1, an area that’s becoming increasingly popular with expats. Being away from the center of the action allows the hotel to spread out a little: it is based in three separate blocks surrounding a large courtyard, which has pleasant indigenous flora and a large pool.

One block contains dining and conference facilities (one room caters for up to 200 people whilst the remaining six service up to 30/40 people). The remaining blocks comprise 60 rooms of accommodation and a small business centre (which consists of just two internet enabled PCs and a single printer).

The hotel has a very refined, polished look, with nice touches such as inlaid wood lining the veranda, hardwood chests on the outdoor dining area, and tasteful wrought iron furniture around the pool. The dining room has a literary-colonial air, with high windows draped in heavy curtains, wall alcoves piled with leather-bound books and a large covered veranda.

Rooms, which are a good size, come equipped with flat-screen TVs with DSTV, small writing desks and air-conditioning. Unfortunately there are small signs of wear and tear in the rooms, plus the air-conditioning can be a little underpowered during the heat of the day and hot water can take a while to work its way through.

That being said, the hotel has just left the South African Protea Hotel group and the new owners plan a major refurbishment, a new wet bar and poolside barbecue, improved business facilities and a new a la carte menu. This work, coupled with easy access to Elegushi beach and the nearby Lekki conservation centre should mean it becomes a good option for those wishing to base themselves a little further away from the freneticness of Lagos or Victoria Island.
