In 2010, Accra’s Novotel underwent a massive renovation to bring its interiors more up to date with its contemporary counterparts in cities like New York, Paris, Toronto and Montreal. The result of that renovation is that the inside of this Novotel feels modern and trendy, but devoid of African design inspiration. This is a bummer, but the least of any traveler’s troubles.

After reading worrying reviews about ant infestations and shocks from electrical outlets, I said a silent prayer after checking in. But my stay went mostly without incident; however despite not having to worry about ants and electrocution, there was a mildewy odor in my room and hallway that was too strong to ignore, which was surprising given the prices and four-star label.

Novotel offers a good base for exploring Ghana’s capital city and surrounding areas, but it seems most popular with business travelers and flight attendants who have no choice but to stay here. The inner workings of the place are more like what’s to be expected at a 3-star hotel. The front desk staff was cordial but I didn’t get remarkable service. The free wi-fi in my room was fast and consistent enough to take care of my browsing needs, and most basic amenities like soap and lotions were available, but anything beyond that was missing: my room didn’t have an iron or an alarm clock, for example. I only stayed for one night so I didn’t bother inquiring, but I’m sure it would get annoying having to call the front desk for an iron every time I needed one.

Where the Novotel Accra scores major points is when it comes to location. It’s positioned in the heart of the City Centre, a short distance from the airport and close to major attractions like the Makola Market, museums and theatre. There’s also a bar, restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, business center, onsite parking and a tennis court, but I doubt travelers would be using much of the latter so I guess that’s more for show. If you have to stay here you’ll be fine bt if you can stay somewhere else then check out the Tulip Inn, or step up to the Movenpick.
