Accommodation in Arusha runs the gamut from high-end luxurious lodges, to run-of-the-mill business hotels, all the way down to the downright basic and terrifying backpacker lodges. But there is one standout that separates itself from the entire pack.

Found 30 minutes outside of the bustling city center of Arusha, down bumpy dirt roads and accessed via a tiny gate, you’ll find Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge, a beautiful farmstead dating back to 1905.

Once the home of a retired German pioneer farmer, Ngare Sero is unlike anything around. Reaching the main lodge area requires a trip over a footbridge and alongside a lake, leading up to an adapted colonial farmhouse on the slopes of Mount Meru. Beautiful sweeping lawns lead down to an adventurous lake area where you can find some 200 species of birds and dollops of fish life — well worth a little boat ride.

The two main house suites and pool cottage with two bedrooms are decorated in lush traditional African style with simple and comfortable fittings. The manor house suite has the unique privilege of a view of Mount Kilimanjaro and overlooks the lake and forest. The 10 garden rooms are slightly on the dark side due to the thick stone walls, but are incredibly comfortable for those seeking peace and quiet. The meals are home cooked comfort food and the dining and bar area is made for long nights of travel stories being told alongside a roaring fire.

You can spend your days horseback riding, learning about local village life, swimming, doing yoga or trout fishing, or simply lazing around poolside or taking advantage of the onsite spa.

Ngare Sero is unique not only in its location, but also in its service. Run by the delightful family team of Mike and Gisella, nothing is too much trouble for them and their staff. Just spending one night will definitely not be enough.
