The unpretentious Uhuru Hotel has been a Moshi institution for years. Originally built and run with support from German missions, it is now completely under the management of the local Lutheran church, and makes a reliable choice if a taste of local life is more of a priority for you than Western-style glitz and amenities.

Rooms here are divided into two wings – the newer Mawenzi Wing (with fan and air-con) and the original Kilimanjaro Wing (with fan and TV). Both are somewhat faded (the Kilimanjaro Wing more so than the Mawenzi Wing), albeit comfortable in a homey sort of way. My preference is for the slightly spiffier Mawenzi Wing. Both wings have a mix of twin and double bedded rooms. Bathrooms throughout are small and functional.

All rooms look out onto spacious, green well-kept grounds that offer Kilimanjaro views from various points, and many of those in the Mawenzi Wing have small verandas. The gardens take on a lovely ambiance in the late afternoon, just before sunset, when large Marabou storks are frequently seen perched in the trees.

In addition to the popular Green Bamboo Barbecue [***insert link to review***], there is a restaurant serving inexpensive home-style Tanzanian and continental dishes, as well as a modest breakfast buffet. There is an in-house safari operator, and a small business center with Internet connection.

Uhuru Hotel is located about 2.5km from Moshi’s town center, and just a short distance from the Arusha road. As with all of Moshi’s hotels, Uhuru Hostel books up completely in late February for the Kilimanjaro Marathon running race.
