La Cour promises “tranquility in the heart of Lagos.” This is no small feat in a city with some of the worst infrastructure and overcrowding issues in the developing world, but to some extent it delivers.

The hotel is located in Ikoyi, which was in colonial times was a whites-only enclave full of elegant European-style residences. Nearly all these properties have since been knocked down to make way for larger residences or office blocks, but it is marginally greener here than other parts of either Lagos Island or Victoria Island.

The main strengths of the property are the dense tropical gardens that surround the rooms. The walkways are thick with the scent of jasmine, and tropical palms drape lazily over the 25m swimming pool and small gym and spa. The bar is a good spot for a quiet drink in the evening and offers a good range of bar snacks and excellent sandwiches.

All rooms are suites and comprise a lounge as well as a bedroom. Though sparsely furnished, they are generously sized, with strong Wi-Fi and 32-inch LCD TVs with DSTV. There is a small desk in each suite’s lounge, though it’s not the best place to work for extended periods.

Unfortunately there are also a number of signs of wear and tear around the property, with chipped or missing tiles in the shower, rust in the fridges and a Jacuzzi that hasn’t worked in 6 months (according to one long-term guest). The gardens also harbor a few mosquitoes, though during the dry season this isn’t really an issue. These smallish problems aside, La Cour is still one of the prettier properties in Ikoyi, and actually gives a sense of being in tropical West Africa.
