This stark piece of 70s concrete modernism, which offers 80 rooms across five floors, sits on one side of a quiet street, while the large casino and conference centre lies on the other side of the road.
Upon entering I found the lobby to be fairly dark, with a couple of small shops selling curios and batik prints and a small business centre (which simply consists of a PC in a small office). The slightly convoluted check-in process involved shuttling between the lobby and the cashier’s window, where I spoke to a disembodied voice hidden somewhere within the depths.
Rooms are fairly sparse but a reasonable size, and are equipped with mini fridges, flat-screen TVs, complimentary water, and a fairly fast wi-fi connection. There is a small desk but it’s not a terribly practical spot to work from. The bathroom looks as though it hasn\’t been refurbished since the hotel was built in the 70\’s, but everything actually works and there are only small signs of wear and tear.
The area to the rear of the hotel features an L-shaped pool protruding from beneath the corner of the building. This means one side of the pool is perpetually in the shade, which can be a good thing on hotter days. The pool has a wet bar on one side, a large thatched cabana on the other, and a well-equipped gym next to the changing rooms. It’s the best spot in the hotel to relax and guests (generally a mix of foreign and Nigerian business people) gather here in the afternoon to indulge in a cold beer and relax in the shade. Presumably they are coming from the above mentioned conference center, which features numerous rooms with between 40 to 2500 person capacity.
Generally the hotel is an example of “if it ain’t broke, don\’t fix it.” Nothing seems to have changed since it opened, but as long as you are prepared for a slightly 70s-style experience, it is not an unpleasant place to stay.
