Epe Resort and Spa, which is 75km from Lagos in neighbouring Edo State, is an upmarket resort owned by Nigerian-backed Moorhouse Group. Its 20 separate chalet-type buildings are nestled into a verdant landscape of protea, indigenous palms and ferns. The air here is fresh and the surrounding country remains relatively unspoiled, making it a welcome break from the noise, dirt and density of Lagos. Here the soundtrack is bird noises rather than motorbike taxis.

Each of the 40 rooms has a flat-screen TV and strong wi-fi connection. Standard rooms have showers, while deluxe rooms have both bath and shower, plus an outdoor terrace. Interiors are stylishly understated, with accent walls clad in sandstone and integrated design features and storage.

The property is exceedingly secure, with a double-gate entry process and thorough vehicle checks. Once within the grounds it is a safe haven where you can take advantage of the large swimming pool, tennis courts, volleyball courts and basketball courts.

Though the spa is supposedly the centerpiece of the property, the monolithic building is still very much under construction and appears to have been for some time. This was the only big letdown of the hotel.

The distance from Lagos is another potential drawback – if you’re planning to regularly commute into the city for work or entertainment, this is not the place for you. But if you’re looking to escape the city for a weekend, or want easy access to Eleko beach (20 mins away), or the new US$16bn Lekki Free Trade Zone (also 20 mins away), Epe Resort & Spa should ranks high on your list.
